On Letting Go: Part 1

I am constantly over-analyzing situations.  I can’t stand when I do it, but I almost can’t stop myself.  Lately I have been trying to make a conscious effort to stop over-thinking things I cannot change.  It is a serious problem that just makes me stressed out and unhappy.

The hardest part about growing is letting go of what you were used to, and moving on with something you’re not.

When my boyfriend and I broke up, and this was a little over a month ago, this was a huge change in my life.  We had been together almost 5 years, and while it had been my decision to make the change, it was still a big decision for me.  That part of my life had turned toxic, it was an unhappiness that had started to leak into other parts of my life, but in the end, I just wanted nothing to do with it.  When I realized I didn’t want to give up other parts of my life in order to be with him or spend time with him, I knew it was time to let go.

It’s usually quite hard to let go and move on, but once you do, you’ll feel free and realize it was the best decision you’ve ever made.

Oh boy is that quote ever true!  I do feel really free.  I feel more focused on school.  I feel like I have time to spend on my other hobbies, and I don’t feel guilty that I am not spending time with someone else instead of enjoying my own time.  I had really started to put my own hobbies aside because I thought I should instead be with him whenever I had free time on the weekends, because we didn’t have a lot of other time together.  And now, I don’t have to worry about that.  I can focus on me and my studying and my own fun stuff.  I can spend a few hours sewing or painting if I want to.  Or I could take a nap in the middle of the day, because I don’t need to hurry to get stuff done so I am free later.  Its so relaxing to realize I don’t have to rush unless I want to.

What you allow is what will continue.

Of course there are some days I am bored and miss having somewhere to be and socializing.  I am working on that tho.  I’m trying to make new friends, and spend more time talking with and being with my old friends that I tend to “let go” of once I am in a relationship.  Another poor habit I am hoping to break this time around.

If you feel like your ship is sinking, it might be a good time to throw out the stuff that’s been weighing it down.  Let go of people who bring you down, and surround yourself with those who bring out the best in you.

This is also true about things.  I am a collector of things.  I feel the need to save things incase of future use, or because of sentimental value.  I’ve been reading a lot about minimalism lately.  And the whole law of attraction.  If you have a lot of stuff and are constantly thinking about all this stuff, you will continue to have all this stuff.  If you think negatively about these things, only negative thoughts will follow.  With that in mind, I’ve been looking through my things and trying to sell or donate as much as I can.  I seriously went through my closet and emptied out a lot of clothes.  I don’t need all this stuff, someone else might really love these clothes, I should give them away.  Those are the thoughts I’ve been having about a lot of things.  So much clutter around my space. The clutter is suffocating sometimes.  Makes me antsy and stressed.  Makes me want to empty out my space and start over.

Back to the law of attraction, one of the examples in The Secret is about a woman who was actively searching for a husband, she lived alone, in a full house of her own things.  She was given advice to start living in her house as if she was already living the life she wanted.  So she parked on one side of the garage, and opened up space on the other.  She cleaned out her closet to have room for someone else’s things, she slept on one side of the bed.  End of the story, she found a wonderful man to marry.  Personally, I think that is an extreme example.  However, the truth is still there, while I have all these possessions holding me back, I am not prepared for my future, the one that I want.  The one where I am living on my own with my own household items.  In a clean house/duplex/condo/etc, all my own, where I can come home after work and spend time on my hobbies or with friends or whoever.  So I’m cleaning out.  I’m removing items that I don’t think I would move with me, or items from the last time I lived on my own, over 5 years ago.  Cleaning house, donating my household items, makes me happier to know I am helping someone, as well as myself, move on.

If you are diligent and patient, everything you truly need in your life will come to you at the right time.

Painted Shoes Inspiration

I have this pair of suede shoes, they are Sketcher Retros.  I bought them sophomore year in college, sooo…2003?  Anyway, I still have them, even tho they are incredibly worn out at this point and you can’t even see the original color.  They used to be a light blue with dark blue leather stripes on the side, and the bottoms were this rubber sole…I can’t even explain.

I had this idea, they are horrible looking now to wear, however before I just throw them out, maybe I’ll try a project and see how it looks.  So I searched the web for “DIY painted shoes” and here are some of the projects I found:

Refashion Friday: Paint Me Pretty

Lately I have had such an urge to use fabric paint on my clothes!  I have a pullover sweatshirt that I ripped out the word applique (the brand name) from the back and I am just finalizing a design for the back with fabric spray paint!  I found some Tulip Fabric Spray Paint and I want to buy it so BADLY!  OK, perhaps not that same pack, but you get the idea!  There are other Tulip Fabric Paints to choose from, or I could easily make my own, I bet there is a recipe out there on Pinterest!

Anyway, to get you in the same mood I am in, check out these awesome fabric paint refashions!

Geometric Designs are always really popular and fairly easy to replicate, as she shows you!

Here’s a fun idea using dyes and fabric spray paint, love the design here!

OK so its not fabric paint, but its pretty similar!  Either way, how cool would this look in ombre??

I know, I know, this isn’t clothes!  But don’t let that stop you!  Be inspired by the idea and apply it to a maxi skirt!

Oh look at that, there totally IS a fabric spray paint DIY!

That first link you see?  That links to my Amazon Affiliate store where I share awesome products that I love, including sweet crafting supplies, the Walking Dead graphic novels and DVDs, and Pinterest Branding books.  Every purchase through those links provides me with a small percentage.  Thank you for considering my Amazon store!

Confession: I Want A New View with Pinterest

Lately I have been spending so much time deleting random Pinterest boards that I somehow have found myself to be following.  I assume many of these random boards are related to a “Follow All to enter this giveaway.”  I can’t stand those, why do I have to follow them all?  I’m still considered a follower if I just pick the ones I might actually enjoy.

You’ve all heard my thoughts on Twitter follows in a previous Confession post, but if you didn’t see it/can’t remember, read about it here.  I’m beginning to think similarily with my Pinterest.  I have never been one to “follow back” just because someone started following me.  I love Pinterest and want to look at quality content, so sorry if I don’t want to see images from your “Glamping” album because I have no interest there.

When I first started Pinterest I wasn’t gluten free, so I followed tons of recipe boards.  Now I find I have no use for “breads”, “pasta”, etc boards.  So a quick unfollow and I feel so much better!  While I am on said person’s board, I see I’m also following a myriad of boards I have no interest in, let alone ever even popup in my feed.  I am following too many boards, I never see everything!  So I am condensing.

I feel kinda guilty about it, but I unfollowed an Etsy board.  As someone who is hoping to sell their items and would love the joy of seeing a bracelet (find some here at my Etsy store!) pinned and repinned on Pinterest, I feel bad to unfollow a board that shares any awesome Etsy items.  However, thats all I see sometimes!  I wish those Etsy Handmade boards were more specific, but thats also so hard to regulate when you have like 50+ (or worse, like 500+) people posting to a board about whatever they want.  How does someone moderate a thing like that?  I suppose I could have my own boards, and share specific items like that, but I also hate having a million boards that people and/or myself aren’t even interested in.

After stopping following a few of the Etsy Handmade boards, I see so much more content!  But one thing I can’t decide, which DIY / Crafts boards should I keep following?  I must be following like 20 of those boards, but I only ever see a few of the same boards posting content, and some of it isn’t even all that “new”, even though most of it claims to be “genius!”  But thats another Confession altogether!  The big multi-contributor boards are the places that are constantly getting posted to, but I really don’t know how relevant some of these ideas are to DIY.  For instance, “Cleaning with Vinegar” is not what I would consider DIY or Crafts, and yet its in that board.  And while recipes are a type of craft, they belong under Recipes.  Know what I’m sayin?

Enlisting your help!  What do you think of these boards?  Keep?  Or unfollow??

DIY & Crafts – 5,000+ contributors!  96,000+ pins.  yowza   (basically takes over my feed)

Do It Yourself Today – 700+ contributors, 14,000+ pins

Budget Friendly DIY – 14 contributors, 176 pins.  must be fairly new

Getting Crafty – 30+ contributors, 3,900+ pins

Create – Just decided to unfollow but am so shocked by one of these pins.  I am sharing because I cannot be the only one who thinks someone’s political agenda was swept up into her mostly DIY board.

Getting Crafty & DIY – 30+ contributors, 3,900+ pins

Share Your Crafts – almost 800 contributors, 2,900+ pins

Mod Podge Rocks! – 125+ contributors, 2,500+ pins

Etsy Handmade Favorites- Group Gallery of Art & Jewelry  – I am also a contributor + 1,800 other people that rarely stick on topic, I’ve also only shared 1 time, and it was on accident. 28,500+ pins    (after looking at this, seriously considering making my own board and only inviting people who will stick to the topic)

After searching through my feed at 2 very different times (morning and night), the majority of pins comes from the 1st link: DIY & Crafts and the Etsy Handmade Faves boards.  They might have to go…at least for a time!

PS. I’ve added a few new items to my Facebook page’s photo albums, some of which are NOT on Etsy yet still for sale!

True Blue Me & You: Doable Unique DIYs

If you are unfamiliar with this blog, it is SO FUN!  I am addicted to DIYs, and I don’t do that many yet, but I LOVE to read about them and find more.  My Pinterest boards are FULL of so many types of DIYs.  I have often thought about having a blog that only shares super awesome DIYs and tutorials.  But there are already a lot of blogs that do just that.

Besides, I am so inconsistent and unorganized.  I would really need to up my game to have a blog like she does.  Though I might someday open a Tumblr blog, maybe when I have time to take more photos of things.

So there you go!

Refashion Fridays: Fabric Paint

So I have recently tried out fabric paint as an experiment for the “color-blocking” I’m going to be doing on a refashion.  I didn’t want to do it without first trying it out, so now I have and I love it!  I wish I liked the shirt more though haha!  But now I am confident I can do it on my latest real refashion, it will be a great tutorial for you guys too!

Love Is All You Need? And other Injustices…

Have you seen this video?

It really upset me that this is what really goes on in grade schools and high schools these days.  Maybe I’ve had my head in the sand, I knew bullying was happening, but I had no idea it was so vile.  Whats really awful, is that the adults in these situations were the ones pushing this behavior, and ok-ing the bullying during the bathroom scene.  And then younger kids tormenting someone, running in to older kids, and its just escalating into worse behavior!  This whole video was incredibly upsetting.  I understand what this video is about, the hetero and homosexual world switching places, but it also really highlights what bullying can do to someone, in this case a child.

I hope this video makes the rounds in schools and parents watch this with their kids.  Please share this video and have a discussion about what bullying is, in its many forms, and that YOU can stand up for others and maybe save their day/life.

Before I saw this video, I saw this horrible article that quotes Mr. Jeffries, the Abercrombie + Fitch CEO, saying he doesn’t want “fat kids” wearing his clothes.  Yes this is real.

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told Salon. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla. You don’t alienate anybody, but you don’t excite anybody, either.”

See one of the articles here.   And:

Robin Lewis, author of The New Rules of Retail, spoke to Business Insider about the kind of people Jeffries wants advertising his brand.

“He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” Lewis said. “He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.’”

I was so upset after reading that article, basically saying bullying is ok.  Then a few days later I saw THAT video.  Which made me even sadder and madder!

(Side note, read this response to Jeffries comments, and make it go viral too!  A Letter to Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries. )

On to the other Injustices

Recently I observed what I considered rude, unprofessional, and slightly (?) bullying behavior, coming from an older adult to a young professional adult.  While it wasn’t in a grade school or high school, or even in a traditional college setting, we are adults and the behavior I saw really bothered me.  I couldn’t let it rest and talked with a faculty member about the situation.  While she did hear me out, her basic response was to “not worry about other people’s injustices.”  This really struck a cord with me, or nerve depending on how you look at it.  While this may not be one of these huge bullying incidences, if one person doesn’t stand up for others, who will?  I can’t sit back and watch someone treat another person without common decency and such a disregard for other’s feelings.  Nobody likes when someone makes them feel bad or “dumb” in front of other people.  And thats what I saw, I couldn’t let it go and it still bothers me.

Why is it these “small injustices” are ok, but a larger bullying injustice isn’t ok?  Shouldn’t they all be not ok?  Don’t we all deserve to be treated well by each other?

Please, stand up for the injustices of others, speak when others won’t or can’t.  You just might make a huge difference in someone else’s life, whether you know it or not.

Not sure what to do with any A+F shirts you have lying around?  Here’s a great idea from Got It At Goodwill!

Sorry I Haven’t Been Too Active Lately

Just want to say even though I want to be more active on the blog, the biggest reason I haven’t been is because I am getting ready for my sister’s baby shower(s) and its basically consuming all my time when I am not working, or trying to work on my jewelry.

2 weeks left then the baby showers will be over, and I can start focusing more heavily on the blog, some DIYs, and some refashions I’ve been dying to try:
