DIY Easily Dress Up Some Flip Flops

I went to an outdoor wedding this past weekend that was “casual” so I already knew I was wearing a lovely sundress, but couldn’t decide what sandals to wear.  I had a pair of black Old Navy flip flops that I got last year (free from Crowdtap- read about that here), but plain flip flops seemed way too dressed down even for a casual outdoor wedding.  So while I was working the other day I had an idea to FINALLY use some of that pretty trim that people always buy and I have no idea what to do with.

So I brought my flip flop to JoAnns with me so I could compare and figure out how much I needed.  I searched the trims and settled on a pretty black lacey beaded trim.  I bought 3/4 of a yard, which was about 4 inches more than I thought I needed, but its best to buy a little extra!  Plus 50% off coupons right now, so it was ok.  I do have the 4 inches leftover because I didn’t mess up at all.  I already know what I am doing with it!

DIY Tutorial Dress Up Flip Flops

So it begins!  Grab your flip flops and whatever pretty trim you want to use.  The trim I chose is a Beaded Lace Trim with flowers, all black.  It is about 1/2″ wide and has about 1/4″ wide space to glue it down.  I used E6000 because I love that stuff for everything!  It worked perfectly.  And now they look great and its such an easy way to dress up an outfit!

And the final product!  I love it!  I got lots of compliments at the wedding 🙂  Check out some of these Party Sandals Under $50 that could be DIY’d a bit to make them even more fun!  I’m a Beso.com affiliate and get a small portion for every click.

Refashion Fridays: Fabric Paint

So I have recently tried out fabric paint as an experiment for the “color-blocking” I’m going to be doing on a refashion.  I didn’t want to do it without first trying it out, so now I have and I love it!  I wish I liked the shirt more though haha!  But now I am confident I can do it on my latest real refashion, it will be a great tutorial for you guys too!

Refashion Fridays: Tshirts

I’ve been going through many of my tshirts to look for a way to refashion them so I actually wear them.  Like many of you, I have collected a bunch of tshirts through the years, many of them too big to actually wear in public, even though they look pretty cool.  So I’m trying some ways to make them fitted, add fringe, or cutouts.  Here is my round-up of inspirations!

Sorry I Haven’t Been Too Active Lately

Just want to say even though I want to be more active on the blog, the biggest reason I haven’t been is because I am getting ready for my sister’s baby shower(s) and its basically consuming all my time when I am not working, or trying to work on my jewelry.

2 weeks left then the baby showers will be over, and I can start focusing more heavily on the blog, some DIYs, and some refashions I’ve been dying to try:

So. Funny Story.

Saturday night was my boyfriend’s birthday, so we went out to dinner to celebrate.

I like to wear leggings when I go out, they are comfortable and I bought these cute (inexpensive) body con skirts to wear with them, plus the awesome new boots my boyfriend got me for MY birthday just a few months ago!

NEW BOOTS!  (obsessed with boots)

So I grabbed a newer pair of leggings, some that I haven’t worn yet but they seemed thicker than my usual go-to pair, and seeing how it was in the mid-20s that evening, it sounded like a good idea.  Plus we had plans to hit the bar later, and I didn’t want to wear my winter coat.  You know how you’re in the bar and if you’re by the door its freezing but if you’re in the back you’re all sweaty?  Well my plan was to move to the middle and just stay there, and be super comfortable all night!

So after a few glasses of sangria (yum!) I head to the ladies’ room.  Whilst in there I have to pull up my leggings….So I do, but these are tight so I have to pull them in bunches (you know what I’m saying).  I pulled them to my knees and from there, pull them up higher.

It wasn’t so much something I heard, but rather felt…the draft that is.

Yep, I ripped my leggings.  And no tiny rip, oh no, I had a hole, in my leggings, and I was at a restaurant.

Just to give you an idea on the size

I must be strong!

I mean perhaps I shouldn’t have worn them.  After-all, they were fairly tight, and not as stretchy as I thought they were.  The waist was really high so I was forcing it up a bit higher than it could probably go.

hole in leggings

see how high the waist is? that should have been my first clue that this was a bad idea.

And this is why leggings are not pants.

Leggings as pants?! nooooo

Don’t be silly.  I was wearing a skirt!  It would be funnier if I hadn’t been, for you reading this, not for me wearing it.

A quick note about the On Fire for Handmade team, they are very active on both Etsy and Facebook.  I am very lucky to be a part of the group, they are great at promoting each other and there are Etsy treasury challenges weekly and then we have “winners” where the treasuries get voted on, and winners again who get featured as advertisers on the On Fire for Handmade website.  Its really quite the group and I suggest anyone who is selling handmade on Etsy look into joining the group!

Birthday Gifts : DIY Infinity Scarves

For my Mom and sister’s birthday I made them scarves.  I wanted to do infinity scarves for them both, however I picked a silky fabric for my Mom and was unable to sew it by hand into a circle.  Instead hers became a silk scarf, but it still looks wonderful!  I was influenced by the lovely Infinity Scarf tutorials by The Crafty Novice, Fabric Mart, and Cotton & Curls.

I apologize for getting this DIY out so late, birthdays were mid-January!  This is the tutorial I hinted about here.  We have been very busy and I just took the finished photos of my sister’s scarf last week.  I always get so excited when I am finished and forget to take the final photo of the finished product!

mom_scarf1

1. Gather your materials: pins, straight edge (I use a large non-ruled T-square), cutting mat, rotary cutter or scissors, coordinating thread
2.  Cut your scarf out, I bought 1/2 yard of this Simply Silky Print fabric, actually a little more because it was End of Bolt, I have leftovers, more than enough for a second scarf
3. Sew your scarf wrong sides together on the long edge, this way you can flip it out and the seams will be inside
4.  Now its tricky, I tried to sew it by hand as you see in the top right photo, but this fabric is too slippery for that
5.  I decided, after I was very unsuccessful, that instead I would fold the edges under (twice), and just sew it straight across with the machine instead
6.  and done!  This is not an infinity scarf, it is a long rectangle silk scarf.

mom_scarf2

This fabric is so beautiful with colors of light pink, dark pink, black, maroon, a dark brown, and dark purple all together!  I am unsure what I will do with the leftover fabric, but I will decide at some point, or I will ask for advice!

On to the next one, a real Infinity Scarf!

liz_scarf1

1.  This was made the exact same way, I eyeballed the width I wanted for the scarf.  I also bought 1 yard of this stretchy knit, though 1/2 yard would have been just fine!  (I have at least 1/2 left now) – Cannot find a link to this fabric, sorry!
2.  This fabric has ruffles and I chose to go the long way with them, it also hid any mistakes I may have made during the cutting/sewing part.
3.  I hand sewed the 2 short ends together, and because this is knit, I pulled a little too much and that’s why it is gather in that spot.
4.  This scarf lays very nicely and is so warm!

liz_scarf2

I love the knit and the colors of magenta, light purple, and light grey on white look so good together!  I cannot decide what I will make with it next!!

I have another knit fabric, about 2 yards that I got from the Red Tag bin at JoAnn Fabrics, that I hope to make a Circle Shirt with.  You may have caught the Pinterest links I posted about Circle shirts here.
